Outer Cap Mold Macro Detail: Threaded Core, Surface Finish and Precision Tolerance Control
What the Macro Shot Reveals
This close-up image captures a critical interface inside an outer cap mold: the precision-machined threaded core seated within the cavity plate. The visible ring-like threads, polished cylindrical surface and surrounding bolt-hole pattern tell engineers several things at once — the mold is built for multi-cavity cap production, the core is designed to form internal screw threads, and the surrounding plate is drilled and counter-bored for repeatable assembly and water-circuit routing.

Threaded Core Design and Cap Function
In packaging molds, the threaded core — also called a screw-thread core or rifling core — is the component that shapes the inside of a screw cap, flip-top closure or outer cap. Its geometry determines:
- Thread engagement: Pitch accuracy and thread angle must match the bottle neck specification, otherwise the cap will be too loose or impossible to open.
- Torque consistency: Surface finish and diameter tolerance affect the “feel” of the cap when consumers twist it.
- Seal reliability: Any coaxial run-out or worn thread land can break the sealing line and cause leaks in liquid packaging.
For high-cavitation molds (24, 48 or 96 cavities), every core must be interchangeable. SHENGQI machines these cores on CNC lathes and cylindrical grinders to ±0.003 mm run-out, then verifies each piece on a CMM before assembly.
Surface Finish and Release Behavior
The mirror-like finish visible in the macro shot is not cosmetic — it is functional. A low Ra surface on the core:
- Reduces plastic adhesion during ejection
- Lowers the risk of thread damage when the cap unscrews off the core
- Minimizes flash formation at the parting line
- Extends cleaning and maintenance intervals
Depending on the polymer, SHENGQI typically specifies Ra 0.05–0.2 μm on the thread land and mirror polish on the core tip that contacts the sealing surface.
Tolerance Stack-Up and Multi-Cavity Consistency
Outer cap molds are often built in high-cavity layouts to meet massive daily volume. A single core that is 0.02 mm oversized or undersized can shift the entire cavity balance. That is why the surrounding plate in the image is machined with precision bolt holes and locating bores: each core is positioned with dowels or shoulder screws so that thread centers align across all cavities.
SHENGQI controls this stack-up through a process chain of CNC roughing, heat treatment, precision grinding, wire-cut profiling and final CMM sampling. Critical dimensions are typically held within ±0.005 mm, with thread pitch verified by optical measurement.
Material Selection and Heat Treatment
For cap molds running PP, PE or PET resins, the threaded core must resist abrasion and mild corrosion from colorants and release agents. Common material choices include:
- SKD61 / H13: Hot-work steel with good toughness and heat resistance, suitable for high-cycle PP/PE caps.
- S136 / 420 stainless: Corrosion-resistant and capable of taking a high mirror polish, ideal for transparent or medical-grade caps.
Vacuum heat treatment followed by stress-relief tempering minimizes distortion, while nitriding or PVD coating can be added for extended wear life.
Why Macro Inspection Belongs in Quality Control
A macro photograph like this one is a fast, non-destructive way to spot chatter marks, incomplete threads, burrs or uneven surface texture before the mold enters production. It is also useful for documenting tool condition during preventive maintenance.
