The photograph above is a precision outer cap mold dimension reference shot. A digital caliper and a steel ruler are placed against the mold plates, confirming the overall length at approximately 129.10 mm. The left side shows the cavity face with 24 cap impressions arranged in three rows of eight, while the right side shows the matching core plate with cooling holes and locating features. For international buyers evaluating cosmetic packaging molds, this kind of dimensioned image is more useful than a studio render because it proves real tooling scale and tolerance discipline.
What the dimension reference tells you
Dimension reference shots bridge the gap between 3D models and physical parts. They answer practical questions that arise during project quoting and DFM review:
- Overall envelope: the caliper reading (~129.10 mm) defines how much machine platen space the mold needs.
- Cavity pitch: the 24 impressions are laid out in a 3×8 grid with uniform spacing, which keeps runner length balanced and fill pressure even.
- Cooling port pattern: the core plate shows drilled water lines and plug locations that feed each cavity block.
- Alignment features: guide pins and locating holes maintain cavity/core register during high-speed cycling.
Why the 24-cavity layout matters for cap molding
Cap molds for shampoo, lotion and flip-top closures are often requested in 16-, 24- or 32-cavity versions. A 24-cavity layout is a practical middle ground: it raises hourly output without forcing the injection machine into excessive clamp tonnage. However, balance is everything. If one row cools faster than another, the parts will differ in shrinkage and thread engagement quality. At SHENGQI, cavity blocks are finish-machined as matched sets so that every impression shares the same steel grade, hardness and surface finish.
Tolerance control from raw stock to assembly
The caliper reading in the photograph is not just a marketing detail. It signals that the mold has been measured against the approved drawing. Typical control dimensions for this class of mold include:
- Overall length/width: ±0.02 mm
- Cavity-to-cavity pitch: ±0.01 mm
- Parting-line flatness: ≤0.01 mm over the full surface
- Guide-pin hole position: ±0.005 mm
- Cooling line positional tolerance: ±0.10 mm relative to cavity center
Our Dongguan and Huangshi plants use ZEISS and HEXAGON CMMs, EASSON vision systems and TRIMOS height gauges to verify these dimensions before shipment.
Cooling strategy for thin-wall cap molding
Visible blue and copper tubes connect to the cavity and core plates. In production, coolant must reach every cavity at a stable temperature; otherwise, the thin outer-cap walls will cool unevenly and cause ovality or flash. The hole pattern in the core plate is designed for serial or parallel water circuits, depending on the customer’s cycle-time target. O-ring grooves are machined into the plate interfaces to prevent leaks above 100 bar injection pressure.
Material and hardening selection
For cosmetic outer cap molds, common steel choices include P20/718H for medium-volume production, S136/420SS for mirror-finish or corrosive resin applications, and SKD61/H13 for inserts needing extra thermal fatigue resistance. Heat treatment, stress-relief tempering and precision grinding are completed before final assembly to keep the measured dimensions stable during the first thousand cycles.
